It’s been a while and I think it might be prudent to talk about what is going on in our industry right now.
Change is happening and fast. I’ve never known so many bridal boutiques closing their doors for good. There is definitely something in the air. Obviously, some people are retiring – and early in some cases. Others may be closing due to the economic climate. It isn’t easy working for yourself is it. There are many up’s and down’s.
Bridal Retail is tough. It isn’t quite the glamorous industry the outside world perceives it as. I’ve worked in sales all my life and Bridal has been the hardest. And that is comparing it to car sales. I always say, if you can sell a wedding dress, you can sell anything.
The new Labour employment rights bill laws are going to be very thought provoking for employers like you, although some of the new laws may not be applicable to you. Flexible working hours may or may not suit your own business, and I imagine working from home is not an option for bridal consultants!
I am by no means an expert, I do though believe there has to be balance on both sides. And, if I may, small businesses are going to bear the brunt of these new laws, together with taxes, NI etc. What a shame the UK Government doesn’t appear to want to support the upwards of 5 million self employed people in this country working their backsides off for little reward.
For me going forward, I shall be there for you should you need help either with my FREE business help desk or with my comprehensive range of courses and services.
I am going to be writing a feature for the next issue of Wedding Trader magazine on just this subject and how to stay positive in such changing times, so stay tuned.
